what to expect

This two-hour introduction to handbuilding with clay slabs and templates is all about getting your hands in the clay, trying something new, socializing, and most importantly, having fun!

This event focuses on creating mugs using flat clay slabs and templates and does not involve the pottery wheel.

The event will start with an instructor-led demonstration that will walk you through the basics of assembling your mug. Then it’s your turn!

You’ll have the rest of the class to explore what you’ve learned and create your mug! Your Stude instructor will be by your side throughout the event to offer guidance, answer questions, and lend a helping hand as you go. Tools needed and a variety of texture tools will be provided to help you add your own creative touch and bring your mug to life.

Jam out to pop party hits. Think Adéla, SOFI TUKKER, Rebecca Black, BAYLI, and more…
(who run the world? girls). Request artists and songs on the registration check out page!

The class will wrap up with about 15 minutes of cleanup before you head out.

Before you go, you’ll choose the glaze of your choice for your mug.

All the tools and materials you’ll need are provided. Feel free to bring your own favorite tools, too, if you have them!

Unless otherwise noted, your instructor is The Stude founder and Owner, Hayley Reed (they/them).

Your Registration Includes

  • Instruction & guidance throughout the event

  • Bisque (1st) firing and glaze (2nd) firing of one piece, up to 6" in size

  • Glazing of pottery by The Stude staff in one glaze color of your choice from our glaze selection

  • Finished work ready for pickup about 4 weeks after the event

  • Email notification when your piece is ready

  • If you’re visiting from out of town or would like your pottery shipped to you, finished work may be shipped for an $18 shipping & handling fee. An invoice will be sent to the email you registered with once your pieces are finished & ready to make their way home!

A Few Things To Note, & Things You Can Choose To Bring

An apron: Aprons aren’t provided, so feel free to bring one if you’d like a little extra protection for your clothes. We also recommend wearing something you don’t mind getting a little muddy! Clay washes out of clothing, but an apron can help keep your outfit a little cleaner while you’re having fun with the clay.

BYOB: “Mud & Mingle” and “Make a Mug” events are 21+ only. Feel free to bring your own beverages to enjoy during class if you’d like! Refreshments are not provided at The Stude, so please plan to bring your own if you’d like something to enjoy during class.

Nails: Shorter fingernails can make working with clay a little easier. If you have longer nails, no worries! Your Stude instructor will be happy to help you find techniques that work comfortably for you.

Extras:
Registration includes glazing and firing for one piece. If you’ve made additional cups or bowls you’d like to keep and fire, you can have The Stude glaze and fire up to two additional pieces for $18 each. Payment for additional pieces will be processed at the end of the event.

Please review the student and studio cancellation policy prior to registering!

Location:
The Stude is located on the second floor of The Rainbow House, a historic building and co-op in Savannah’s Starland District.
You’ll find The Stude at 25 E 40th Street, Savannah, GA 31401, on the corner of E 40th Street and Drayton Street.

Please note: Getting to The Stude requires climbing a set of outdoor patio stairs followed by one flight of interior stairs. There is currently no elevator to get to the studio.

The nitty gritty & a few pottery disclaimers: Making pottery doesn’t end when you leave the studio. Drying, firing, glazing, and firing again can sometimes bring unexpected surprises that are out of our control. Pieces can occasionally crack, break, or otherwise not make it through the process for a variety of reasons.

The Stude will do our best to catch and address potential issues along the way, and we’ll carefully handle and care for your work through each step of the drying, glazing, and firing processes. Unfortunately, sometimes the clay and the kiln get the final say!

Your piece will be lightly trimmed and smoothed with a flat bottom, then fired and glazed in the Stude glaze of your choice. It will be ready for pickup in a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six weeks. We hope you’ll get to take home the piece you made, but if it doesn’t survive the clay processes: drying, glazing, and firing, we’ll offer a similar piece made by your Stude instructor in the glaze of your choice.
