what to expect

The session will start with the foundational building blocks of wheel throwing. Students will learn centering, opening, pulling walls, and throwing a cylinder (cup). From there, each week’s demonstrations will introduce new forms and techniques that build on what you’ve learned. We’ll explore how to make cups, mugs, bowls, plates, surface decoration, and a variety of glazing techniques. You’ll learn a lot!

This weekly class includes in-depth demonstrations and dedicated practice time during each class, with an instructor there to answer questions, troubleshoot challenges, and offer guidance as you work. Whether you’re new to the wheel or already have some experience, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment, build confidence, and develop your own skills and ideas in clay.

Your 8-week session fee includes access to open studio five days a week, with nearly 30 hours of open studio time available each week. Use this time outside of class to practice, work on class projects, or simply spend more time with clay. The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you’ll become!

Your class registration includes 25lbs of your choice of Brown Speckled Clay or Buff Off-White Clay. Additional bags of clay are available to purchase through The Stude for $40/bag.

A Few Things To Note, & Things To Bring

Tools: Tools are not included. The Stude does offer a generous supply of shared community tools. You may buy tools from your favorite retailer or purchase a standard tool kit or a “Hayley’s Favs” tool kit when you check out.

An apron: Aprons aren’t provided, so feel free to bring one if you’d like a little extra protection for your clothes. We also recommend wearing something you don’t mind getting a little muddy! Clay washes out of clothing, but an apron can help keep your outfit a little cleaner while you’re having fun with the clay.

Nails: Shorter fingernails can make working with clay a little easier. If you have longer nails, no worries! Your Stude instructor will be happy to help you find techniques that work comfortably for you.

Location:
The Stude is located on the second floor of The Rainbow House, a historic building and co-op in Savannah’s Starland District.
You’ll find The Stude at 25 E 40th Street, Savannah, GA 31401, on the corner of E 40th Street and Drayton Street.

Please note: Getting to The Stude requires climbing a set of outdoor patio stairs followed by one flight of interior stairs. There is currently no elevator to get to the studio.

Parking: Free street parking is available on E 40th St. and around the streets near The Rainbow House/The Stude. There is a paid lot on E 40th St. across the street from The Rainbow House/The Stude.
